What Is PRINCE2 P3O Foundation?

PRINCE2 P3O Foundation is the entry-level certification in PRINCE2 Project, Programme, Portfolio Office Management, known as P3O. It provides guidance on establishing and running the offices that support decision-making, governance, and delivery across an organisation's projects, programmes, and portfolios.


The P3O guidance combines principles, processes, and techniques that make portfolio, programme, and project management more effective through enablement, challenge, and support structures. It is aligned to PRINCE2 Project Management, PRINCE2 Programme Management, and PRINCE2 Risk Management, so it fits naturally alongside the rest of the framework.


At Foundation level, the focus is on essential knowledge: understanding the P3O model, how it is implemented, and how to act as an informed member of, or interact effectively with, an office within that model.


Within the PRINCE2 qualification scheme, Foundation is the first of two modules that lead to the PRINCE2 PMO Manager designation.

Where Does PRINCE2 P3O Foundation Fit in the PRINCE2 Certification Pathway?

PRINCE2 P3O Foundation sits at the start of the PRINCE2 PMO Manager stream. To reach the PRINCE2 PMO Manager designation, you take two modules in order: P3O Foundation first, then PRINCE2 P3O Practitioner.


There are no prerequisites for Foundation, so you can start here whatever your background. Once certified, you can progress to Practitioner, where you learn to design, implement, and manage P3O offices.


PRINCE2 PMO Manager is one of six designations in the wider PRINCE2 framework, alongside PRINCE2 Project Manager, Agile Expert, Programme Manager, Portfolio Manager, and Risk Manager. Holding all six leads to PRINCE2 Master.

  • Exam body: PeopleCert
  • Duration: 60 minutes (non-native English speakers receive an additional minutes)
  • Format: Multiple-choice, closed book
  • Number of Questions: 70
  • Passing Score: 35 out of 70 correct answers (50%) 
  • Delivery Options: Online proctored exam (available anytime, anywhere through PeopleCert) 

Certification Renewal

All PeopleCert Global Best Practice certifications need to be renewed every 3 years. You have two options to keep your certification current:

Option A — Pass any PRINCE2® exam
  • Taking and passing any PRINCE2® exam before your renewal date extends the validity of all your PRINCE2® certifications for another three years.
Option B — Collect CPD points with PeopleCert Plus Membership
  • With an active PeopleCert Plus subscription, you can renew by logging at least 20 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points per year for 3 consecutive years. PeopleCert Plus also gives you access to industry insights, emerging trends, and best practices to stay current in your field.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for PRINCE2 P3O Foundation. It is the starting point of the PRINCE2 P3O scheme and is suitable for any career stage.


If you already hold Foundation and want to progress, the next step is PRINCE2 P3O Practitioner, which together with Foundation leads to the PRINCE2 PMO Manager designation.

What does the exam involve? 

The exam is 70 multiple choice questions over 60 minutes. It is closed book, and the pass mark is 50%, which is 35 correct answers. It is taken online with proctoring.

Which designation does PRINCE2 P3O Foundation lead to? 

Foundation is the first of two modules toward PRINCE2 PMO Manager. After Foundation, you take PRINCE2 P3O Practitioner to complete the designation.

How is P3O related to the rest of PRINCE2?

P3O guidance is aligned to PRINCE2 Project Management, PRINCE2 Programme Management, and PRINCE2 Risk Management, so it supports and connects the offices that run projects, programmes, and portfolios.

Does the certification expire?
