What Is PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Foundation?

PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Foundation (MoP) is the entry-level certification in the PRINCE2 Portfolio Management scheme, known as MoP, which stands for Management of Portfolios. It gives you an overview of how organisations select, prioritise, and oversee their projects and programmes so that the right work gets done and delivers value.


At Foundation level the focus is on understanding the method: its core concepts and terminology, how portfolios align with organisational strategy, and how to prioritise initiatives against objectives and resources. You also learn how benefits, governance, and resources fit together across a portfolio.


PRINCE2 Portfolio Management is developed and administered by PeopleCert. AGILEPM HUB is a PeopleCert Accredited Training Organization, and training for this module is in development.


Within the PRINCE2 qualification scheme, Foundation is the first of two modules that lead to the PRINCE2 Portfolio Manager designation. The MoP name still appears on certificates and badges during the current transition, and is being phased out as the scheme moves fully to the PRINCE2 Portfolio Management name.

Where Does PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Foundation Fit in the PRINCE2 Certification Pathway?

PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Foundation sits at the start of the PRINCE2 Portfolio Manager stream. To reach the PRINCE2 Portfolio Manager designation, you take two modules in order: Foundation first, then PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Practitioner.


There are no prerequisites for Foundation, so you can start here whatever your background. Once certified, you can progress to Practitioner, where you learn to apply portfolio management at an advanced level.


PRINCE2 Portfolio Manager is one of six designations in the wider PRINCE2 framework, alongside PRINCE2 Project Manager, Agile Expert, Programme Manager, Risk Manager, and PMO Manager. Holding all six leads to PRINCE2 Master.

  • Passing Score: 25 out of 50 correct answers (50%) 
  • Delivery Options: Online proctored exam (available anytime, anywhere through PeopleCert) 

Certification Renewal

All PeopleCert Global Best Practice certifications need to be renewed every 3 years. You have two options to keep your certification current:

Option A — Pass any PRINCE2® exam
  • Taking and passing any PRINCE2® exam before your renewal date extends the validity of all your PRINCE2® certifications for another three years.
Option B — Collect CPD points with PeopleCert Plus Membership
  • With an active PeopleCert Plus subscription, you can renew by logging at least 20 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points per year for 3 consecutive years. PeopleCert Plus also gives you access to industry insights, emerging trends, and best practices to stay current in your field.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Foundation. It is the starting point of the PRINCE2 Portfolio Management scheme and is suitable for any career stage.


If you already hold Foundation and want to progress, the next step is PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Practitioner, which together with Foundation leads to the PRINCE2 Portfolio Manager designation.

What is the difference between MoP and PRINCE2 Portfolio Management?

They are the same scheme. MoP, which stands for Management of Portfolios, is the long-standing name and still appears on certificates and badges. PeopleCert is moving the scheme to the PRINCE2 Portfolio Management name, so you may see both during the transition.

Are there any prerequisites for PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Foundation?

No. There are no prerequisites. It is suitable for any career stage and is the starting point for the PRINCE2 Portfolio Manager designation.

What does the exam involve? 

The exam is 50 multiple choice questions over 40 minutes. It is closed book, and the pass mark is 50%, which is 25 correct answers. It is taken online with proctoring.

Which designation does PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Foundation lead to?

Foundation is the first of two modules toward PRINCE2 Portfolio Manager. After Foundation, you take PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Practitioner to complete the designation.

How is portfolio management different from programme and project management? 

Project management delivers a single project, programme management coordinates related projects toward strategic change, and portfolio management sits above both, choosing and prioritising which projects and programmes an organisation should invest in at all.

Is the certification accredited?

Does the certification expire?

PRINCE2 Portfolio Management certifications are renewable every 3 years. You can keep yours current through PeopleCert membership by logging 60 CPD points across the cycle, or by completing another exam in the same product suite before your renewal date.
