What Is PRINCE2 Programme Management Foundation?

PRINCE2 Programme Management Foundation (MSP 5th edition) is the entry-level certification in the PRINCE2 Programme Management scheme, widely known as MSP. It introduces a holistic method for managing programmes, the coordinated delivery of multiple projects and activities that together achieve strategic change.


At Foundation level the focus is on understanding the method: the programme management principles, the programme lifecycle from identification through to closure, and the governance and control that keep a programme aligned to organisational strategy. You also learn how benefits realisation, risk and issue management, and quality management fit together across a programme.


PRINCE2 Programme Management is developed and administered by PeopleCert. AGILEPM HUB offers this certification as self-paced eLearning, with the official eBook and an exam voucher included.


Within the PRINCE2 qualification scheme, Foundation is the first of two modules that lead to the PRINCE2 Programme Manager designation. The MSP name still appears on certificates and badges during the current transition, and is being phased out as the scheme moves fully to the PRINCE2 Programme Management name.

Where Does PRINCE2 Programme Management Foundation Fit in the PRINCE2 Certification Pathway?

PRINCE2 Programme Management Foundation sits at the start of the PRINCE2 Programme Manager stream. To reach the PRINCE2 Programme Manager designation, you take two modules in order: Foundation first, then PRINCE2 Programme Management Practitioner (5th edition).


There are no prerequisites for Foundation, so you can start here whatever your background. Once certified, you can progress to Practitioner, where you learn to apply the method to real programmes.


PRINCE2 Programme Manager is one of six designations in the wider PRINCE2 framework, alongside PRINCE2 Project Manager, Agile Expert, Portfolio Manager, Risk Manager, and PMO Manager. Holding all six leads to PRINCE2 Master.

Certification Renewal

All PeopleCert Global Best Practice certifications need to be renewed every 3 years. You have two options to keep your certification current:

Option A — Pass any PRINCE2® exam
  • Taking and passing any PRINCE2® exam before your renewal date extends the validity of all your PRINCE2® certifications for another three years.
Option B — Collect CPD points with PeopleCert Plus Membership
  • With an active PeopleCert Plus subscription, you can renew by logging at least 20 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points per year for 3 consecutive years. PeopleCert Plus also gives you access to industry insights, emerging trends, and best practices to stay current in your field.

There are no prerequisites for PRINCE2 Programme Management Foundation. It is the starting point of the PRINCE2 Programme Management scheme and is suitable for any career stage.


If you already hold Foundation and want to progress, the next step is PRINCE2 Programme Management Practitioner, which together with Foundation leads to the PRINCE2 Programme Manager designation.

No. There are no prerequisites. It is a core module suitable for any career stage and is the starting point for the PRINCE2 Programme Manager designation.

What does the exam involve? 

The exam is 60 multiple choice questions over 60 minutes. It is closed book, and the pass mark is 60%, which is 36 correct answers. It is taken online with proctoring, and a voucher is included with your course.
