What Is PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation?

PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation (Version 7) is the entry-level certification in the PRINCE2 Project Management scheme. It introduces a structured, scalable method for managing projects of any size, and gives you the core knowledge to participate in a project team or run smaller projects yourself.


At Foundation level the focus is on understanding the method: the seven principles that guide good project decisions, the seven practices that run throughout a project, and the seven processes that take a project from start to finish. Version 7 also brings the method up to date, with a stronger emphasis on people, the integration of sustainability into project performance, and guidance on digital and data management.


PRINCE2 is trusted by more than 2 million certified professionals and used in over 20,000 organisations worldwide. It is developed and administered by PeopleCert. As a PeopleCert Accredited Training Organization, AGILEPM HUB delivers Foundation through self-paced eLearning and live instructor-led training, both with the official eBook and an exam voucher included.


Within the PRINCE2 qualification scheme, Foundation is the first of two modules that lead to the PRINCE2 Project Manager designation.

Where Does PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation Fit in the PRINCE2 Certification Pathway?

PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation sits at the start of the PRINCE2 Project Manager stream. To reach the PRINCE2 Project Manager designation, you take two modules in order: Foundation first, then PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner (Version 7).


There are no prerequisites for Foundation, so you can start here whatever your background. Once certified, you can progress to Practitioner, where you learn to apply and tailor PRINCE2 to real projects.


PRINCE2 Project Manager is one of six designations in the wider PRINCE2 framework, alongside PRINCE2 Agile Expert, Programme Manager, Portfolio Manager, Risk Manager, and PMO Manager. Holding all six leads to PRINCE2 Master.

Certification Renewal

All PeopleCert Global Best Practice certifications need to be renewed every 3 years. You have two options to keep your certification current:

Option A — Pass any PRINCE2® exam
  • Taking and passing any PRINCE2® exam before your renewal date extends the validity of all your PRINCE2® certifications for another three years.
Option B — Collect CPD points with PeopleCert Plus Membership
  • With an active PeopleCert Plus subscription, you can renew by logging at least 20 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points per year for 3 consecutive years. PeopleCert Plus also gives you access to industry insights, emerging trends, and best practices to stay current in your field.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation. It is the starting point of the PRINCE2 Project Management scheme and is suitable for any career stage.


If you already hold Foundation and want to progress, the next step is PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner, which together with Foundation leads to the PRINCE2 Project Manager designation.

What is PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation? 

PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation (Version 7) is the entry-level certification in the PRINCE2 Project Management scheme. It teaches the principles, practices, and processes of the method so you can take part in projects and manage smaller ones with confidence.

Are there any prerequisites for PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation?

No. There are no prerequisites. It is a core module suitable for any career stage and is the starting point for the PRINCE2 Project Manager designation.

What does the exam involve?

The exam is 60 multiple choice questions over 60 minutes. It is closed book, and the pass mark is 60%, which is 36 correct answers. It is taken online with proctoring, and a voucher is included with your course.

What is included when I enrol?

Both formats include the official PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation eBook, learner resources, practice exams, and an online proctored exam voucher. eLearning adds around 9 hours of self-paced interactive content with case studies and practical exercises. Live training is an instructor-led course.

What is the difference between the eLearning and live training options?

eLearning is self-paced and you study on your own schedule. Live instructor-led training is delivered by an accredited trainer and lets you ask questions in real time. Both lead to the same certification and both include the exam voucher.

What is new in PRINCE2 Version 7?

Version 7 adds a stronger focus on people, integrates sustainability into project performance, and includes guidance on digital and data management, alongside the seven principles, practices, and processes.

Which designation does PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation lead to? 

Foundation is the first of two modules toward PRINCE2 Project Manager. After Foundation, you take PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner (Version 7) to complete the designation.
