What Is ITIL® AI Governance (Version 5)?

ITIL® AI Governance is the only extension module in the ITIL (Version 5) qualification scheme. It provides practical, scenario-driven guidance for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and improving AI governance across organizations of any size and industry.

Unlike other ITIL (Version 5) modules, AI Governance has no prerequisite. It is designed for a broad and diverse market seeking to strengthen the governance of AI capabilities across their organization. AI is applicable across all industries and relevant to every role, as it impacts business activities at operational, tactical, and strategic levels.

The course is built around two core models and two supporting frameworks. The ITIL AI Capability Model (6C) classifies what an AI system does across six capabilities: Creation, Curation, Clarification, Cognition, Communication, and Coordination. The ITIL AI Governance Improvement Model provides the four-step method for governing it: assess and stress-test, define requirements and design adjustments, implement improvements, and maintain governance. Alongside these sit the four AI governance perspectives and the four governance patterns, which shape how governance is designed and where authority sits.

You will learn to identify AI risks, apply ethical principles and countermeasures, design governance controls and decision boundaries, manage Shadow AI, govern agentic AI, and translate regulatory requirements into working controls and evidence.

The course also covers how AI governance integrates with complementary frameworks including ITIL, PRINCE2, and DevOps, and with external standards such as ISO/IEC 42001 and IEEE 7014-2024, ensuring governance operates within the broader ecosystem that already manages products, services, projects, risks, and improvement.

This certification is developed and managed by PeopleCert and is recognized by employers worldwide.

Where Does ITIL® AI Governance Fit in the Certification Pathway?

ITIL® AI Governance (Version 5) is an extension module. It sits outside the three main designation streams (Practice Manager, Managing Professional, Strategic Leader) and is not required for any ITIL designation.

Key characteristics:

  • No prerequisite. Anyone can take this certification, regardless of their ITIL background.
  • Standalone certification. It does not count toward any ITIL designation.
  • Cross-industry relevance. Designed for professionals across all industries, not just IT
  • Complements all ITIL modules. While AI governance concepts are embedded throughout other ITIL (Version 5) modules, this dedicated certification provides focused, in-depth guidance

This makes ITIL® AI Governance accessible to a much broader audience than other ITIL certifications, including business leaders, compliance professionals, risk managers, and anyone involved in AI adoption decisions.
