What Is ITIL® Strategy (Version 5)?

ITIL® Strategy (Version 5) is an advanced module in the ITIL (Version 5) certification scheme. It equips professionals and leaders with practical guidance for developing and implementing digital strategies that align organizational capabilities, products, services, and business outcomes.

This certification focuses on how strategy operates in today's rapidly changing digital landscape — including VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) environments, digital transformation, and AI-enabled ways of working. You'll learn the ITIL Strategy Management Model with its two interconnected cycles: strategy development (observe, orient, decide, plan) and strategy implementation (plan, execute, synthesize, reflect).

The course also covers strategic capabilities including leadership, governance, innovation, responsible AI, organizational change management, digital ethics, portfolio and risk management, and sustainability — all essential for leaders shaping the direction of digital organizations.

ITIL® Strategy (Version 5) is designed for senior leaders, strategists, and decision-makers who want to connect strategic intent with consistent performance, value creation, and organizational resilience.

Note: Like other ITIL (Version 5) advanced modules, the ITIL® Strategy exam is open book and scenario-based. You may use both the official eBook and the Scenario Booklet during the exam.

Certification Renewal

All PeopleCert Global Best Practice certifications, including ITIL® Strategy (Version 5), need to be renewed every 3 years. You have two options to keep your certification current:

Option A — Pass any ITIL® exam
  • Taking and passing any ITIL® exam before your renewal date extends the validity of all your ITIL® certifications for another three years.
Option B — Collect CPD points with PeopleCert Plus Membership
  • With an active PeopleCert Plus subscription, you can renew by logging at least 20 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points per year for 3 consecutive years. PeopleCert Plus also gives you access to industry insights, emerging trends, and best practices to stay current in your field.

Is ITIL® Strategy (Version 5) an entry-level certification?

No. ITIL® Strategy is an advanced module. You must hold either ITIL® Foundation (Version 5) or ITIL 4 Foundation before enrolling. Accredited training is also required before sitting the exam.

What is the prerequisite for ITIL® Strategy (Version 5)?

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes. Upon passing the exam, you will receive an official ITIL® Strategy (Version 5) certificate issued by PeopleCert.

Does the ITIL® Strategy certification expire?

All PeopleCert Global Best Practice certifications need to be renewed after 3 years. You can renew by passing any ITIL® exam (which extends all your ITIL certifications for three years) or by collecting CPD points through PeopleCert Plus Membership.

How is the exam conducted?

The official PeopleCert ITIL® Strategy (Version 5) exam is online proctored (available anytime, anywhere), with 40 scenario-based multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes duration (non-native English speakers receive an extra 25%), open book (official eBook only), and a passing score 70%.

When will the eLearning be available?

Pre-orders are open now — course access will be activated automatically on the release date.

How long will I have access to the eLearning?

You'll have 12 months of access to the eLearning platform from the date of activation.

Can I upgrade from eLearning to Live Training?

Yes. You can upgrade to the Live Instructor-Led Training anytime by paying the difference in course fees (before your exam voucher is issued).
