What Is PRINCE2 P3O Practitioner?

PRINCE2 P3O Practitioner is the advanced certification in PRINCE2 Project, Programme, Portfolio Office Management, known as P3O. Where Foundation builds essential knowledge, Practitioner is about application: you learn to design, implement, manage, or work within any component office of a P3O model.


The P3O guidance combines principles, processes, and techniques that make portfolio, programme, and project management more effective through enablement, challenge, and support structures. It is aligned to PRINCE2 Project Management, PRINCE2 Programme Management, and PRINCE2 Risk Management.


At Practitioner level you go deeper into building the right P3O model for an organisation, developing a business case for senior approval, engaging stakeholders, and putting governance and decision support in place.


Within the PRINCE2 qualification scheme, Practitioner is the second of two modules. Completing it alongside Foundation earns you the PRINCE2 PMO Manager designation.

Where Does PRINCE2 P3O Practitioner Fit in the PRINCE2 Certification Pathway?

PRINCE2 P3O Practitioner is the second and final module in the PRINCE2 PMO Manager stream. The path is PRINCE2 P3O Foundation first, then Practitioner. Holding both gives you the PRINCE2 PMO Manager designation.


Practitioner has a prerequisite, so you take it once you hold P3O Foundation. After it, you have completed a full designation in the PRINCE2 framework.


PRINCE2 PMO Manager is one of six designations in the wider PRINCE2 framework, alongside PRINCE2 Project Manager, Agile Expert, Programme Manager, Portfolio Manager, and Risk Manager. Holding all six leads to PRINCE2 Master.

By the end of this training, you will be able to

  • Exam body: PeopleCert
  • Duration: 150 minutes (non-native English speakers receive additional minutes)
  • Format: Multi-part questions, open book, scenario-based
  • Number of Questions: 4 questions (80 marks total)
  • Passing Score: 40 out of 80 marks (50%) 
  • Delivery Options: Online proctored exam (available anytime, anywhere through PeopleCert) 

Certification Renewal

All PeopleCert Global Best Practice certifications need to be renewed every 3 years. You have two options to keep your certification current:

Option A — Pass any PRINCE2® exam
  • Taking and passing any PRINCE2® exam before your renewal date extends the validity of all your PRINCE2® certifications for another three years.
Option B — Collect CPD points with PeopleCert Plus Membership
  • With an active PeopleCert Plus subscription, you can renew by logging at least 20 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points per year for 3 consecutive years. PeopleCert Plus also gives you access to industry insights, emerging trends, and best practices to stay current in your field.

P3O stands for Portfolio, Programme, and Project Offices. The guidance covers how to set up and run these offices to support governance, decision-making, and delivery.

What are the prerequisites for PRINCE2 P3O Practitioner?

You need to hold PRINCE2 P3O Foundation before you sit the Practitioner exam.

What does the exam involve?

The exam uses scenario-based, multi-part questions: 4 questions worth 80 marks in total, over 150 minutes. It is open book, and the pass mark is 50%, which is 40 marks. It is taken online with proctoring.

Which designation does PRINCE2 P3O Practitioner lead to? 

Practitioner completes the PRINCE2 PMO Manager designation. Once you hold both Foundation and Practitioner, you are a PRINCE2 PMO Manager.

Is the Practitioner exam open book?

Yes. The P3O Practitioner exam is open book, so you can refer to the official guidance during the exam. Foundation, by contrast, is closed book.

Is the certification accredited?

Does the certification expire?

PRINCE2 P3O certifications are renewable every 3 years. You can keep yours current through PeopleCert membership by logging 60 CPD points across the cycle, or by completing another exam in the same product suite before your renewal date.
