What Is PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Practitioner?

PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Practitioner (MoP) is the advanced certification in the PRINCE2 Portfolio Management scheme, known as MoP, which stands for Management of Portfolios. Where Foundation builds understanding, Practitioner is about application: you learn to apply portfolio principles, techniques, and practices to real organisations and lead change in fast-paced, dynamic settings.


The course deepens your expertise across strategic alignment, prioritisation, risk and benefits, governance, planning and delivery, change, and resource management, so you can optimise a portfolio and make confident investment decisions.


PRINCE2 Portfolio Management is developed and administered by PeopleCert. AGILEPM HUB is a PeopleCert Accredited Training Organization, and training for this module is in development.


Within the PRINCE2 qualification scheme, Practitioner is the second of two modules. Completing it alongside Foundation earns you the PRINCE2 Portfolio Manager designation. The MoP name still appears on certificates and badges during the current transition, and is being phased out as the scheme moves fully to the PRINCE2 Portfolio Management name.

Where Does PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Practitioner Fit in the PRINCE2 Certification Pathway?

PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Practitioner is the second and final module in the PRINCE2 Portfolio Manager stream. The path is PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Foundation first, then Practitioner. Holding both gives you the PRINCE2 Portfolio Manager designation.


Practitioner has a prerequisite, so you take it once you hold Portfolio Management Foundation. After it, you have completed a full designation in the PRINCE2 framework.


PRINCE2 Portfolio Manager is one of six designations in the wider PRINCE2 framework, alongside PRINCE2 Project Manager, Agile Expert, Programme Manager, Risk Manager, and PMO Manager. Holding all six leads to PRINCE2 Master.

Certification Renewal

All PeopleCert Global Best Practice certifications need to be renewed every 3 years. You have two options to keep your certification current:

Option A — Pass any PRINCE2® exam
  • Taking and passing any PRINCE2® exam before your renewal date extends the validity of all your PRINCE2® certifications for another three years.
Option B — Collect CPD points with PeopleCert Plus Membership
  • With an active PeopleCert Plus subscription, you can renew by logging at least 20 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points per year for 3 consecutive years. PeopleCert Plus also gives you access to industry insights, emerging trends, and best practices to stay current in your field.

What is the difference between MoP and PRINCE2 Portfolio Management? 

They are the same scheme. MoP, which stands for Management of Portfolios, is the long-standing name and still appears on certificates and badges. PeopleCert is moving the scheme to the PRINCE2 Portfolio Management name, so you may see both during the transition.

What are the prerequisites for PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Practitioner?

You need to hold PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Foundation (MoP) before you sit the Practitioner exam.

What does the exam involve?

The exam uses scenario-based, multi-part questions: 4 questions worth 80 marks in total, over 180 minutes. It is open book, and the pass mark is 50%, which is 40 marks. It is taken online with proctoring.

Which designation does PRINCE2 Portfolio Management Practitioner lead to?

Practitioner completes the PRINCE2 Portfolio Manager designation. Once you hold both Foundation and Practitioner, you are a PRINCE2 Portfolio Manager.

Is the Practitioner exam open book?

Yes. The Practitioner exam is open book, so you can refer to the official guidance during the exam. Foundation, by contrast, is closed book.

Is the certification accredited?

Does the certification expire?

PRINCE2 Portfolio Management certifications are renewable every 3 years. You can keep yours current through PeopleCert membership by logging 60 CPD points across the cycle, or by completing another exam in the same product suite before your renewal date.
