What Is PRINCE2 Programme Management Practitioner?

PRINCE2 Programme Management Practitioner (Version 5) (MSP 5th edition) is the advanced certification in the PRINCE2 Programme Management scheme, widely known as MSP. Where Foundation builds understanding of the method, Practitioner is about application: you learn to apply MSP principles and best practices to real programmes and deliver measurable value to your organisation.


The course deepens your expertise across governance and control, stakeholder engagement, benefits realisation, resource management, and risk and issue management. You also develop the problem-solving skills needed to handle the complex challenges that programmes bring, and learn to tailor the method to your own context.


PRINCE2 Programme Management is developed and administered by PeopleCert. AGILEPM HUB offers this certification as self-paced eLearning, with the exam voucher included.


Within the PRINCE2 qualification scheme, Practitioner is the second of two modules. Completing it alongside Foundation earns you the PRINCE2 Programme Manager designation. The MSP name still appears on certificates and badges during the current transition, and is being phased out as the scheme moves fully to the PRINCE2 Programme Management name.

Where Does PRINCE2 Programme Management Practitioner Fit in the PRINCE2 Certification Pathway?

PRINCE2 Programme Management Practitioner is the second and final module in the PRINCE2 Programme Manager stream. The path is PRINCE2 Programme Management Foundation first, then Practitioner. Holding both gives you the PRINCE2 Programme Manager designation.


Practitioner has a prerequisite, so you take it once you hold the Foundation certification or an equivalent earlier MSP qualification. After it, you have completed a full designation in the PRINCE2 framework.


PRINCE2 Programme Manager is one of six designations in the wider PRINCE2 framework, alongside PRINCE2 Project Manager, Agile Expert, Portfolio Manager, Risk Manager, and PMO Manager. Holding all six leads to PRINCE2 Master.

Certification Renewal

All PeopleCert Global Best Practice certifications need to be renewed every 3 years. You have two options to keep your certification current:

Option A — Pass any PRINCE2® exam
  • Taking and passing any PRINCE2® exam before your renewal date extends the validity of all your PRINCE2® certifications for another three years.
Option B — Collect CPD points with PeopleCert Plus Membership
  • With an active PeopleCert Plus subscription, you can renew by logging at least 20 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points per year for 3 consecutive years. PeopleCert Plus also gives you access to industry insights, emerging trends, and best practices to stay current in your field.

What is the difference between MSP and PRINCE2 Programme Management?

They are the same scheme. MSP, which stands for Managing Successful Programmes, is the long-standing name and still appears on certificates and badges. PeopleCert is moving the scheme to the PRINCE2 Programme Management name, so you may see both during the transition.

What are the prerequisites for PRINCE2 Programme Management Practitioner? 

You need to hold PRINCE2 Programme Management Foundation (MSP 5th edition) or MSP 4th edition Practitioner before you sit the exam. Results are not released without proof of completion.

What does the exam involve?

The exam uses objective testing with 58 questions and sub-questions worth 70 marks, over 150 minutes. It is open book, and the pass mark is 60%, which is 42 marks. It is taken online with proctoring, and a voucher is included with your course.

What is included when I enrol?

Enrolment includes the official learner resources, around 10 to 12 hours of self-paced interactive content, and an online proctored exam voucher.

Which designation does PRINCE2 Programme Management Practitioner lead to?

Practitioner completes the PRINCE2 Programme Manager designation. Once you hold both Foundation and Practitioner (5th edition), you are a PRINCE2 Programme Manager.

Is the Practitioner exam open book?

Yes. The Practitioner exam is open book, so you can refer to the official guidance during the exam. Foundation, by contrast, is closed book.

Does the certification expire?
