What Is PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner?

PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner (Version 7) is the advanced certification in the PRINCE2 Project Management scheme. Where Foundation builds understanding of the method, Practitioner is about applying and tailoring it: you learn to adapt PRINCE2 to the size, complexity, and context of a real project, lead teams, and deliver on time, on budget, and within scope.


The course takes the seven principles, practices, and processes you met at Foundation and shows you how to put them to work. Version 7 also brings a stronger focus on people and collaboration, the integration of sustainability and ESG into project performance, and practical guidance on digital and data management.


PRINCE2 is developed and administered by PeopleCert and is trusted by millions of professionals worldwide. Within the PRINCE2 qualification scheme, Practitioner is the second of two modules. Completing it alongside Foundation earns you the PRINCE2 Project Manager designation.

Where Does PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner Fit in the PRINCE2 Certification Pathway?

PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner is the second and final module in the PRINCE2 Project Manager stream. The path is PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation first, then Practitioner. Holding both gives you the PRINCE2 Project Manager designation.


Practitioner has a prerequisite, so you take it once you hold Foundation or an equivalent recognised project management certification. After it, you have completed a full designation in the PRINCE2 framework.


PRINCE2 Project Manager is one of six designations in the wider PRINCE2 framework, alongside PRINCE2 Agile Expert, Programme Manager, Portfolio Manager, Risk Manager, and PMO Manager. Holding all six leads to PRINCE2 Master.

Certification Renewal

All PeopleCert Global Best Practice certifications need to be renewed every 3 years. You have two options to keep your certification current:

Option A — Pass any PRINCE2® exam
  • Taking and passing any PRINCE2® exam before your renewal date extends the validity of all your PRINCE2® certifications for another three years.
Option B — Collect CPD points with PeopleCert Plus Membership
  • With an active PeopleCert Plus subscription, you can renew by logging at least 20 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points per year for 3 consecutive years. PeopleCert Plus also gives you access to industry insights, emerging trends, and best practices to stay current in your field.

What is PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner?

PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner (Version 7) is the advanced certification in the PRINCE2 Project Management scheme. It teaches you to apply and tailor PRINCE2 to real projects, lead teams, and deliver successfully on time, on budget, and within scope.

What are the prerequisites for PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner?

You need to hold PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation (Version 7) or an equivalent recognised certification, such as PRINCE2 5th or 6th Edition, PMP, CAPM, an IPMA level, PPQ, PMQ, CSPM-2, or CSPM-3. The full list is in the Prerequisites section. Results are not released without proof of completion.

What does the exam involve? 

The exam uses objective testing with 56 questions and sub-questions worth 70 marks, over 150 minutes. It is open book, and the pass mark is 60%, which is 42 marks. It is taken online with proctoring, and a voucher is included with your course.

What is included when I enrol?

Both formats include the official learner resources, practice exams, and an online proctored exam voucher. eLearning adds around 8 hours of self-paced interactive content with case studies and practical exercises. Live training is an instructor-led course.

What is the difference between the eLearning and live training options?

eLearning is self-paced and you study on your own schedule. Live instructor-led training is a 2-day course where you learn directly from an accredited trainer and can ask questions in real time. Both lead to the same certification and both include the exam voucher.

Which designation does PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner lead to?

Practitioner completes the PRINCE2 Project Manager designation. Once you hold both Foundation and Practitioner (Version 7), you are a PRINCE2 Project Manager.

Is the certification accredited?

Does the certification expire?

PRINCE2 certifications are renewable every 3 years. You can keep yours current through PeopleCert membership by logging 60 CPD points across the cycle, or by completing another exam in the same product suite before your renewal date.

Is the Practitioner exam open book?
